Monday Read or listen to the story again. Retell the story using the prompts on p11. Focus on using the time words - First, Then, After that, Next, Finally. Try writing the words that are missing if you can. Tuesday Read the poem on p13. Clap out the rhythm of the poem. Look at the pictures on p14. Are they all mentioned in the poem? Which are the odd ones out? Wednesday Read the poem on p13 again. p15/16 Can you draw or paint a rainbow? Thursday Read the poem on p13 together again. p17 Look at the action words from the poem. Can you act them out? Have a go at writing them - trace them with your finger, draw them on a surface - if you can, make a feely tray using salt or flour to write the words. Don't worry if you can't. Friday - Read the Worm and Spider fact files with an adult on p21 and p22. What is your favourite minibeast? Have a go at making your own minibeast fact file with an adult on p23. Don't worry about printing the page, make your own on plain paper. Do some counting. Try counting objects - socks, pennies, grapes, any objects you can find lots of. Can you guess how many there might be before you count them? Do some exercise- Play the floor is lava game. Put cushions and tea towels on the floor. Make your way around the room without touching the floor. R.E. Create a prayer area/altar to Mary like you did last week. Say the Hail Mary together. Ask Mary to pray for us and our families that we stay safe and healthy.
Maths Monday - Go on a shape hunt Look for shapes around your house. Can you find circles, squares, triangles, rectangles? What can you say about each shape? A circle is curved, a square has four sides that are the same length, a triangle has 3 sides, a rectangle has 2 longer sides that are the same length and 2 shorter sides that are the same length. Play I spy using clues like - I see a shape that has 3 straight sides. Play Shape Tickle - draw shapes on your child's back and ask if they can guess what the shape is by feeling it. You can ask - How many sides has it got? How many sides do you think are the same length? Can you draw a shape picture? Tuesday - Investigate measurement (length) Get some different length socks (adult ones, children's ones). Which is the longest sock? Which is the shortest? If you have more than two sizes - can you order them from longest to shortest? Can you find a sock that is longer/shorter than this one? How many of the shortest socks would be the same as the longest sock? Wednesday - Investigate measurement (weight) - In the kitchen can you find anything that is heavy? Can you find something light? Can you find something heavier than ....? Can you find something lighter than....? Can you order the objects from lightest to heaviest? Make two labels - heavy / light - and sort the objects you have found. Thursday - Investigate measurement (capacity) Choose 2 or 3 different size containers - cup, jug, bucket. Which container will hold the most water? Which will hold the least amount of water? Order the containers from least to most. Talk about the cup being empty. Then fill the cup with water. Tell me when the cup is full. How many cups do you think it will it take to fill the jug? How many cups will the jug fill? Friday - Investigate position and direction Get your favourite cuddly toy. Can you put him on the table, under the table, next to the fridge, in your bed, behind the couch, in front of the TV? Ask your child to shut their eyes. Can they say where the toy is now? Encourage them to use full sentences to describe the position of the toy -e.g The teddy is in front of the TV. Challenge:
Make some music. Get creative as family. Create some home made instruments. Make a guitar using an empty tissue box and rubber bands. Make shakers using toilet rolls (cover both ends with paper), empty milk bottles, cracker or cereal boxes filled with rice, lentils, beans or pasta. Make a water xylophone - fill glass jars with different amounts of water, use a spoon to tap each jar - what sounds can you hear? Decorate your instruments once you've made them. Complete one activity each day as follows: Monday - Talk about the characters and objects from the story p6 Tuesday - Look at the Ladybird Words on p7 Match the words to the pictures Wednesday - P8 Try to be each character as you read, changing your voice and do the actions. Thursday - Rhyme Time p9 Read the rhyme - can you pick out the rhyming words? Don’t forget to count every day – Use your number book to count forwards to 10 and backwards from 10. Start at different numbers other than 1 or 10 e.g. Can you count to 10 starting at 4? Do some exercise: Sing Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and do the actions. Can you go fast and then slow? Can you say it in a funny voice? Now try If your happy and you know it with different actions - clap your hands, stamp your feet, nod your head, shout WE ARE, do all four. Sing the Hokey Cokey and do the actions. R.E. We are now in May. This is the month of Mary. Mary is the Mother of Jesus. Create a prayer area/altar to pray to Mary. Use a table, chair or small space on the floor. The colour for Mary is blue so find a blue cloth, tea towel, tshirt and lay it down. Make a cross out of anything you have – playdough, pasta, paper, lego, sticks. Say a prayer to thank Mary for looking after Jesus. Say the Hail Mary that you have been practising for the last 2 weeks.
Maths Monday - Sort objects into groups by size, colour or shape Find any objects that could be sorted into different groups such as knives, forks, spoons, buttons, beads, blocks, Lego bricks. Talk about what is the same or different. Can you put them into two groups -eg. all the blue Lego bricks in one group and all the red ones in another group. All the knives in one group, all the spoons in another. Get another one of the objects - which group should I put it into? You could play odd one out - place a different object into a group. Which one doesn't belong? Tuesday - Make simple patterns Take any of the objects that you had yesterday and make a simple pattern e.g knife, spoon, knife, spoon red brick, yellow brick, red brick, yellow brick button, coin, button, coin Can you say what the pattern is? Can you copy the pattern? What would come next? Can you keep the pattern going? Try simple patterns with different objects. Can you make your own pattern for someone in your family to continue? Wednesday - Make more complex patterns Using the objects you have used over the last two days, can you make a more complex pattern? For example : knife, spoon, spoon, knife, spoon, spoon blue brick, yellow brick, yellow brick, blue brick, yellow brick, yellow brick cup, cup, bowl, bowl, cup, cup, bowl, bowl Can you say what the pattern is? Can you copy the pattern? What would come next? Can you keep the pattern going? Can you make your own pattern for someone in your family to continue? Thursday - Make some number cards for the numbers 1-10. You could use paper, cardboard from a cereal box or tissue box, anything you can write numbers on. Write the numbers. Mix them up and put them in order from 1-10. Hide one of the numbers. Can you say which one is missing? Pick a number. What number comes next? Before? Choose another number. What is one more? What is one less? If you have a dice, roll the dice and find the card that matches the dots. Choose a number and find that many objects as quickly as you can. You could make a second set of 1-10 cards and play Snap or Go Fish. Challenge Floating or sinking
Collect ten objects from around the house that are fine to be put in water. Write a numbered list of what you have got on a piece of paper. Find something to use that will hold water e.g bath, sink, washing up bowl, container large enough for your objects. Fill your container with water. Say if you think the object will float or sink before you put it into the water. You can write down what you think on your list. Put the object in the water. Which ones floated? Put these into one group. Which ones sank? Put them into another. Write down your results on your list. Did anything surprise you? Hello Reception. Have you had a good week? Can you write each number in your book? Challenge: Can you say how many objects there are (up to 5) without counting them? Can you say what is 1 more or 1 less than each number up to 10? Choose two numbers, make them with objects and say which number is more or less. Make some number cards - can you order the numbers from 1-10? Count backwards from 10. Challenge Feely Bag Create your own feely bag, such as an old rucksack, an empty tissue box or cereal box (please no plastic bags) with items in from around the house. Use a bag that you cannot see through. This is a great way for children to explore their senses. Encourage your child to think about what the object feels like and use describing words for the objects. Are they bumpy, bubbly, rough or furry? Children can develop a wide vocabulary by thinking about different texture words. If they are finding it difficult to come up with their own words, ask them questions such as - is it hard or soft? Is it rough or smooth? Try to use different types of objects. Challenge: Play a matching game afterwards. Can you find two objects that are bumpy or two that are smooth? Hello Reception class.
