Design Technology

In our topic 'Terrific Technology', we will be exploring communication.
We have already done some research into the history of communication. We know that there are lots of different methods and machines to use in order to communicate with others.
Today I would like you to research into Morse Code which was invented by the inventor Samuel Morse.
I want you to think about the following questions when researching;
  • How does a telegraph work?
  • When was the machine invented and why?
I have included some useful websites and videos that may help when researching
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORIDAmGf_yQ  - Youtube (Invention of Morse Code The Dr. Dinocs Show)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zq4dq6f   - Bitesize
 https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/morse-code   - CBBC

I would like you to design your own simple telegraph (Morse code machine).
I want you to explore different types of switches you might want to use to make it easier to tap codes.
Think about how you would send the message.

Once you have designed your machine, I want you to think about how you could modify your machine so that it would work for a person with hearing difficulties. (If I give you a clue it would be the answer! Think about this carefully)

I would love to see your designs.
Remember you can take photos and email them to the school email address. Remember to put my name in the subject box.

May - The Month of Mary
Mary, The Mother of Jesus.

If you have created a prayer area, I would like you to spend time changing the altar to reflect Mary. The cloth for this month is blue.
You could find some coloured paper, tea towel or a blue t-shirt.
I would like you to lay a rosary down. If you do not have one then it would nice to make one. You can draw one and cut it out or use pasta and string,
Be creative!
Once your prayer area is ready, I would like you to write out the Hail Mary nicely and place it on your altar.
Spend some time reflecting and say the Hail Mary.

For this R.E session, I would like you to think about who Mary is to us.
I would like you to do some research and write up the information you have found in your own words.
The link below will help you gather information
https://www.britannica.com/biography/Mary-mother-of-Jesus

In school, each class would choose a title for Mary and decorate their altar to reflect.
I would like you to choose with your family a title that means a lot to you.
Below are a few examples that you may want to research.
You can then draw your depiction of the title of Mary and add it to your altar.

Mary, Queen of the World
Mary, Queen of Peace
Mary, Queen of Nature
Mary, Star of the Sea
Mary, Our Lady of Lourdes
Mary, Queen of the Angels
Mary, Queen of Heaven

Mary, Queen of the Universe.

English - The True Story of the Three Little Pigs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB07RfntTvw  - The True Story of 3 Little Pigs
Plan a short story
This half term in english, we would be focussing on fairytales and reading 'The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by A.Wolf.
In this session, I would like you to listen to the story (see youtube link)  and then box up the main ideas of the story. Last week, you spent time looking at boxing up the story 'The King of Fishes'. Please use that as a guide.
When boxing up this story, you will be looking at the key features.
Main character and characters
Opening: Who, what, when, where
Build up and Problem: What is the problem in this story?
Resolution: How was it solved?
Ending: What has happened at the end?

Read or listen to the story again and take those things into consideration. Jot down some notes of each part.
You are going to plan your own adaptation of a fairytale.
I would like you to change it to make it more interesting.
Goldilocks and the Three bears from Little Bears point of view
Little Red Riding Hood from the wolfs point of view
Snow White from a Dwarfs point of view
Or you could change the characters of 'The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs' and have a different scenario (maybe it's three wolves and a bad pig).

Plan your story.
Next week Thursday you will be writing your story,

Bank Holiday Fun!

Learn some fun popular dance routines.
My favourite dance at the moment is the Cha Cha slide.
Give it a go!

Sing songs with your family.
I'm currently singing a lot of Backstreet Boys songs.

Spend time indulging in cooking/baking with your family.
I made homemade vegetarian pizzas using pitta bread.
It was very easy and tasty!

Play some fun games with your family.
I've been playing charades with my sister. (She doesn't like to lose).

Enjoy the Bank Holiday and have a lovely weekend!
Stay Safe!
