Today the Reception children who are in school used the Cafod interactive tool from this week's R.E. part of the blog to design their own part of God's wonderful world.
Hello Reception for the last time this year. This is your final week of home learning. We look forward to seeing you back in September in YEAR 1! How exciting! Enjoy your holidays. Have fun but do try to do some reading and counting! The answers to last week's Summer Spot the Difference were - the colour of the girl's swimming costume, the colour of the man's apron, one less cloud in the sky, one less sunflower, the colour of the flowers on the bush, the colour of the drink on the table, the ladybird on the wall has disappeared and there are flowers on the grass in front of the paddling pool. Well done if you got them all! Read using Myon - Log in to https://www.myon.co.uk/login/index.html Myon will still be available during the Summer holidays. Watch this number rap about 15. https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/presenters-number-rap-15 Tuesday- Subtraction as take away Use the bus template below or draw your own on paper. Find 10 objects that could represent people. If you have Lego people, perfect! Otherwise you can use buttons or anything else that will work as counters. Keep these safe as you will need them again tomorrow. Place 10 objects onto the windows of the bus. Use the sentences - First there were 10 people on the bus. Then 4 people got off. Now there are 6 people on the bus. Keep practising - Try starting with different numbers such as 9 or 7 and use different numbers of people getting off the bus. Wednesday - Subtraction as partitioning You need the bus and objects that you had yesterday. You also need some paper to draw part-part-whole model diagrams on to show what you are doing like you did last week. See the one below for ideas. Start with the story - First there were 9 people on the bus. (Write 9 in the whole circle at the top). Then 4 people got off the bus. (Draw 4 objects in the first part circle). Now there are ....... (How many objects will you draw in the final part circle to show how many people are still on the bus? 5) Repeat with different starting numbers and different parts being taken away. Draw the part-part-whole model to match your story. Thursday - Subtraction as take away Play Four in A Row. See the instructions and game board below. Roll 2 dice. If you haven't got dice use this interactive dice. https://nrich.maths.org/6717 Click on the purple cog to change to dots instead of numbers. Take the smaller number away from the larger number. Use objects if you want to help you. Cover the answer with a counter. The first person to cover four numbers in a row is the winner. Friday - Subtraction as difference Watch this Numberblocks episode about difference in Maths. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bn57fv/numberblocks-series-3-whats-the-difference Roll a dice and build a tower using that number of blocks. Roll the dice again. Build another tower of blocks using that number of blocks. Put the two towers next to each other. What's the difference between the two towers? Practise saying The difference between 4 and 6 is 2. Challenge: Now that you are coming to the end of Reception class and moving to Year 1 in September, talk to your grown up about what you enjoyed doing in Reception this year. It is sad that many of you didn't get to finish your year at school but there were many things that you did while you were at school. What do you remember about your time in Reception? What did you enjoy? What was your favourite activity? What can you do now that you couldn't do in Nursery? Was there anything you didn't like?
Looking forward to Year 1 - What are you looking forward to? What are you worried about? What will be the same as Reception? What will be different? In order to help your child get ready for Year 1, there are many things you can help them to do over the Summer holidays.

After brushing, I do an activity - maybe phonics, or counting, going outside for a walk. Then it's lunchtime. Next, I do another activity - maybe reading, building or playing. After that, I have my dinner. Then it's bathtime. Finally at night-time, it's time to go to bed. Talk to someone in your house about what you do during the day. Try to use the key words - First, next, then, after that, finally. What do you do in the morning? What do you do in the afternoon? What happens at night-time? Use the cards below or make up your own. Can you use them to order your day? Wednesday: This week we are looking at time. Days of the week: Learn this song about the days of the week. http://www.seetospell.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Days-of-the-Week-Song-Starting-with-Monday.pdf It is sung to the tune of the Addams Family. Months of the year: Listen to this song called 'Time for another year.' https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/songs/time-another-year The song mentions different seasons. Do you know what the four seasons are? Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. Winter is in December, January and February. Spring is March, April and May. Summer is June, July and August. Autumn is September, October and November. Now we are in June - which season are we in? Think about what the weather is like in each season. Look in your wardrobe - What would you wear in the winter when it's cold? What would you wear in summer when it's warmer? What happens to the trees during Spring? What happens to them in Autumn? Friday: This week we are looking at time. Measuring time in simple ways. You will need a timer - mobile phones have a timer or you might have one in the kitchen. You will need one with seconds. How many hops/skips/jumps can you do in 15 seconds? Did it feel like a long or short time? Try again - how many hops/skips/jumps can you do in 30 seconds? 30 seconds is double 15 seconds. Did it feel longer or shorter than before? Now, how many hops/skips/jumps can you do in 1 minute? Did it feel like a very long time? Get your coat/jacket. How long does it take you to put it on? Time yourself. Try again, can you do it quicker the second time? Time yourself tidying up your toys? How long does it take you? What else can you time yourself doing? Challenge: Spending all this time at home means that sometimes we get bored.
Watch this lesson from Oak National Academy. https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/bored Enjoy the story 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy. Maybe you can try using your imagination to make up your own story. Have you got a box that you could use? What could your box become? Reading: This week choose an ebook each day from https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/books/free-ebooks/. It is free to register for parents. Browse by age to try and have a go at reading a book yourself or read a book with an adult. Which words do you recognise? Can you talk about what happened in the story? R.E.: June is the month of the Sacred Heart. Change your altar to the colour red. Decorate it with hearts. Think about how much Jesus loves us. Say this prayer with your family. Dear Jesus, Thank you for loving me. Amen
Maths: Every day practise writing your numbers from 0 - 10. Remember to always start at the top. This week make a weather chart - it could look something like this: Each day record what the weather is like on the chart. Draw a sun if it's sunny, a cloud if it's cloudy, rain if it's rainy. Discuss the days of the week, say them in order, link to yesterday, today and tomorrow, such as: What day is it today? What is the weather like? What day was it yesterday? What was the weather like yesterday? What day will it be tomorrow? What do you think the weather will be like tomorrow? At the end of the week, count how many sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy days there have been. Challenge: Could we have 8 cloudy days in one week? Challenge:
The next time it rains, go out puddle jumping with a grown-up. Put on your wellies and jump in the puddles. What words would you use to describe the puddles? What sounds can you hear when you jump in them? Hello Reception. Hope you enjoyed your half term. Here is your learning for this week. Reading: This week listen to a Cbeebies story every day. Talk about what you liked, what you didn't like, if it reminded you of another story that you have read. Remember to talk in full sentences e.g I liked it when...... https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b00jdlm2/cbeebies-bedtime-stories Practise your counting. Count forwards to 20, backwards from 20. Start at other numbers than 1 or 20 and count forwards or backwards. Count things you can find around your house. How many people? How many spoons? How many oranges? P.E. Play Simon Says. You can only do the moves that Simon says to do e.g Simon says jump up and down 10 times, Simon says touch the ground, Simon says hop on one foot. See if you can trick someone by NOT saying Simon says and just giving the instruction e.g Run on the spot. Then they are out. Take turns with someone in your family. R.E. Yesterday (31st May) was Pentecost Sunday. Share the story of Pentecost together. After Jesus had gone back to his Father in heaven, his friends were sad. They missed him. They felt lonely and afraid without him. On Pentecost day, they were all together in the house. Crowds of people came to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast. The friends of Jesus did not go out to join them. They stayed all together in the house. They talked about Jesus and remembered what he had told them. As the wind filled the room, they began to feel different. Joy and happiness filled their hearts. It was wonderful. They knew that Jesus had kept his promise to send a new friend, the Holy Spirit. “Let’s go out and join the crowds.” Peter said. “Let’s tell them the Good News that Jesus is alive.” Based on Acts 2: 1-4 As you read the story, use your face to show how Jesus' friends were feeling as the story goes on.
Maths Monday Doubling - Look in a mirror. Hold 1 finger up. Can you see twice as many fingers? How many fingers are there? (2). It is called doubling when we have twice as many as something. Double 1 is two. Hold 2 fingers up. Now there are double 2 fingers. How many now? (4) Repeat for 3 fingers, 4 fingers and 5 fingers. Tuesday Doubling - Explore doubling using different objects. Sit facing another person. Get 1 toy. The other person matches that with 1 toy. Now we have 2. Double 1 is 2. Get 2 of something else. Can you match it? How many altogether? Repeat for 3, 4 and 5. If you have dice or dominoes, look for double patterns. You could use an egg carton to make double patterns as well. Place objects in each 'egg' space on one side, match with objects on the other side to make a double. How many in total? Wednesday Halving - When we talk about halving we talk about sharing equally between two groups (making sure each group has the same amount and that it is fair). Have a teddy bear's picnic with 2 bears (or any soft toy) and 2 plates. Get 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 different food items or objects to represent food. e.g 2 oranges, 4 biscuits, 6 pieces of cucumber, 8 cherry tomatoes, 10 grapes/raisins. Share the items equally so that each bear has the same amount. What if I gave one teddy 3 out of the 4 biscuits and the other teddy 1 out of the 4? Is that fair? Challenge: What if I had 1 sandwich or 1 apple? Can I share it between the teddy bears? How can I share it? I could cut it in half (two pieces that are the same). Thursday Halving - Get any objects and make a group of 2. Share equally between you and another person. How many have you got? Practise saying "Half of 2 is 1." Do the same with 4 objects. Share equally between you and another person. How many have you got? Practise saying "Half of 4 is 2." Do the same with 6, 8 and 10 objects. Remember to say each time, "Half of ___ is ___." Friday Watch the Numberblocks episode "Double Trouble". https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08q4jkq/numberblocks-series-2-double-trouble Practise counting the doubles - double 1 is 2, double 2 is 4, double 3 is 6, double 4 is 8, double 5 is 10 Practise saying the halves - half of 2 is 1, half of 4 is 2, half of 6 is 3, half of 8 is 4, half of 10 is 5 Keep practising doubling and halving/sharing in everyday situations e.g. having a snack or sharing toys Challenge:
Choose from one of these activties or if you have time do them all!

Describe them using the words on p28. Remember to talk in full sentences - The stone is smooth and flat. Friday - Read together the poem Dr Knickerbocker on p29. Do the actions as you say it. Do some counting every day - Count objects around your house. How many windows do you have? How many chairs? How many beds? How many doors? How many tables? Remember the last number you count is the total number of what you have. PE - Choose a song and work together to create a dance. Who can remember all the moves? Play musical bumps or musical statues - Play music. When the music stops, freeze like a statue or bump onto the floor. R.E. Create a prayer area/altar to Mary like you did for the last two weeks. Did you know that Mary is also known as the Queen of Nature? Put a natural object on your altar such as a stone, flower or a leaf. Say the Hail Mary together. Think about all the wonderful things that God created for us to enjoy.
Maths Monday - Enjoy this counting storybook called Ten Monkey Jamboree. Tuesday - In the story Ten Monkey Jamboree, there were lots of ways to make 10. Can you find different ways to make 10? Get 10 objects - anything you can find 10 of will do - pegs or lego bricks or buttons. Separate the ten objects into two groups e.g 1 and 9. Push the two groups together. Count the objects. How many are there altogether? When you find one way, practice saying it in a sentence e.g 1 and 9 make 10, 2 and 8 make 10, 3 and 7 make 10... Can you spot the pattern? What will come next? Challenge: Can you say how many I need to add to 3 to make 10 altogether? Use your objects to find what adds to 3 to make 10. Try to keep these objects somewhere safe. You will need them again on Friday. Wednesday - Look at this picture. Think about what you can see. Remember to use full sentences to talk about what you can see. 3 big fish and 4 small fish make 7 fish altogether. Can you make up some of your own questions about objects in the picture? Can you make up a number story to go with the picture? - First 2 octopuses were in the sea. Then 3 more octopuses came along. Now there are 8 octopuses altogether. Thursday - Watch this counting backwards story from Cbeebies called Ten Little Pirates https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b069x9cs/cbeebies-bedtime-stories-510-gemma-hunt-ten-little-pirates Friday - Find your 10 objects that you had on Tuesday. Count your objects to make sure you have 10. Now pick up 1 of your objects and hide it behind your back. How many have you got left? Talk about what has happened - First I had 10. Then I took 1 away. Now I have 9 left. Continue taking 1 away each time like in the story from yesterday. Remember to say what has happened - First I had 9 or 8 or 7 etc Then I took 1 away. Now I have 8 left or 7 left etc Keep going until you have only 1 left. What happens if you take that one away? Now I have 0 (zero) left. Talk about what 0 means (none left, nothing at all).
