Home Learning blog - Day 33

26/2/2021

Happy Friday Year 1!

We have reached the end of another week of learning from home and my goodness me, I am so impressed with your dedication and progress! Keep it up, seeing your AMAZING work every day puts the biggest smile on my face!

Here are your learning activities for today:

Reading:
Refresh your memory of the story ‘Please do not sneeze’.
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Then complete ‘Play Activity 2’ this is a sequencing task.
Put the pictures in the order they appear in the story.

Picture

Phonics:
Today things are getting rather exciting in Phonics. You are going to look at all the letter combinations that make an 'igh' sound. Before starting the lesson can you list the ones you can think of, there is a little clue below. Then see if you have missed any when you watch the video lesson below.
Enjoy Year 1!!

English: To answer questions about a book
Before we begin with today's task, discuss what the word comprehension means. We are going to listen to the story again and then answer questions based on the book. We are recalling information!

You could also watch an animated version of the story found here:

There are different types of questions to answer, some are multiple choice, some require you to write a sentence to answer, others are true or false and some ask you to sequence sentences.

Maths: To count in 2s, 5s and 10s.
Today, you have another task to complete on PurpleMash to round up the week and area of learning within Maths.
This week you have been focusing on 2s and 5s, but I know you can count in 10s too as we have previously looked at how many tens are in a number.
Answer the questions, make sure you read each one carefully and do not rush!! But most importantly Year 1, have fun with your learning. If you need objects out to help you, or your previous work from the week out to use as well feel free to!

Catch up afternoon:
Use this afternoon to complete any work you may not have finished from the week.
Please ensure you send over all the work you have done this week at home!

Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Enjoy your story time too, I do love listening to a story read aloud by the author!

Have a relaxing weekend everyone, I look forward to seeing all of your work from today!!

Home Learning blog - Day 32

25/2/2021

Good Morning Year 1!

How are you all doing today? Are you ready for some more learning activities?

I cannot quite believe we are nearing the end of another week of learning from home. Well done to you all, you are doing such a fabulous job and making me so very proud!

Let's get started with today's learning activities:
Reading:
We are going to read a new book today, it is called ‘Please do not sneeze’.
You can find it on this website - remember you need to log in to access the books:
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Please read the story from cover to cover.
Then think about these two questions:
  • Did you like the story?
  • What was your favourite part?

Some of you have also been accessing MyOn at home which is lovely to see. It is so great that you are reading more than once a day!
Picture

Phonics:
You are going to be looking at yet another split diagraph sound today - 'e-e'.
We say the rhyme "e-e, e-e, Pete and Steve". Can you think of any other words or names of people you know which use this sound?
Watch and join in with the below lesson.

English: To describe a character.
Listen to the story below again.

Think about the characters you are introduced to in the story. Are they good or bad characters? How do you know? How would you describe them? Choose a couple of the children and describe them to someone in your house (you do not need to write these descriptions down!)
Now we are going to think about the main character George. How would you describe him?
Use the sentence starter:
George is ....

As a challenge can you use the conjunctions 'and' or 'but' in your description? Can you use the prefix 'un-' too (e.g. unkind)?
How many sentences can you write to describe him? In school I would ask for a minimum of three, but can you write any more?
Picture

Maths: To count in 5s.
Before you start today's lesson, watch and join in with the song below. Here you are counting in steps of 5.

Now, follow along with the lesson on this website:
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-7-number-place-value-within-50/
You are going to be counting in 5s again. Complete the questions below when told to throughout the lesson.

History: To identify differences between old and new objects.

Today your history work is on PurpleMash. Find the 2Do called 'Changing Homes'. Here you need to select 3 images of homes and put them in the order:
Past
Present
Future

Can you describe each house any why it belongs in the time period you have chosen. Use the prompts on the left hand side to help you write a sentence or two about each house.

Keep smiling everyone!
Miss Kennedy ?

Home Learning blog - Day 31

24/2/2021

Hello Year 1!

Good morning everyone and welcome back to another day of home learning. I hope you are enjoying getting back to work after half term and feel ready to make some more progress.

Don't forget to send you work to me every day!
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk
It has been wonderful to see all the amazing progress from the children who have been sending their work over to me every day, if you haven't managed to send anything over to the email, please contact school!

Here are your learning activities for today:
Reading:
Find the book Rowing Boats again on the website:
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/
Today we are going to find out what happens next in the story.
Recap the start of the story and then continue reading to the end.
Was your prediction correct?

Now it's time to complete the Play activities from the website:
Play activity 1: can you sort the oi and oa words?
Play activity 2: Can you match the rhyming words?
Picture

Phonics:
Today is a review lesson. Here you will recap the sounds you have learnt most recently.
Don't forget to visit the Phonics Play website for further practise of these sounds if you feel you need to.
www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/5

English: To review a story.
Watch me read the story below. Then we are going to review it.

Did you enjoy the story? What was your favourite part?
To review the book, complete the book review below.

Maths: To count in 5s.
Today you are going to start to learn how to count in 5s. Do you notice a pattern when you do this?
Follow along with the lesson found here:
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-7-number-place-value-within-50/
What can you find that you can count in 5s?
Can you colour in the numbers you would say when you count in 5s? What do you notice?

RE: To recognise that Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent.
There are 40 days in Lent.  The first day of Lent is ‘Ash Wednesday’.  People go to church and the priest makes a cross with ashes on each person’s forehead.  Sometimes this happens in school and Ms McDaid makes a cross with ashes.  It’s a reminder that Lent is a time for remembering Jesus and growing into better people, a time to choose ways of growing.  The ashes are made by burning the palms that were used at Palm Sunday last year.
Picture

Your task today is to Make a Lenten tree.  You could use real twigs or draw a picture.

We are like trees that change and grow when we become more loving.  Add the label to your tree: Remember Jesus and help me to change and grow.

How are you going to try to grow and change during lent?
You could also write this under your tree.

Have a great day everyone, keep doing your best and I look forward to seeing the work you complete today.

Home Learning blog - Day 30

23/2/2021

Good Morning Year 1!

I hope you are all well and safe. I miss you all so much, but seeing your lovely work makes me smile every day!

Don't forget to send your work in so I can see what you have achieved and celebrate with you!
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Here are your learning activities for today:

Reading:
We are going to start to read the book Rowing Boats today.
You can find it here:
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Recap what you thought might happen in the story, what did you predict?

Now begin to read from the start and STOP on page 11.

Here we are going to make another prediction:
What do you think will happen next and why?
Picture

Phonics:
We are going to look at another split diagraph today, today's sound is made by the two letters 'u-e'. In school we would say: "u-e, u-e, huge brute" to help us remember the sound.
Join in with the lesson below and have lots of fun!

English: To make a prediction.
Here is something I have made at home, can you tell what it is?
Picture

Now have a look at the cover and blurb of a new book.
Whilst looking at all three of these images, what do you think this book is going to be about? How do you think the story will end?
Picture
Picture
Use these sentence structures to help you write your sentences:
I think this story is going to be about...

At the end of the story I think .... will happen.

As an extra challenge, can you use the word 'because' in your sentence?

Maths: To count in 2s.
Find the second lesson on counting in 2s here:
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-7-number-place-value-within-50/
Complete the work below when instructed to throughout the lesson.

Geography: To describe my own house. To use google maps.
With an adult use google maps and explore our local area. In the below image, I have searched for our school's post code and then clicked on the satellite view.
Can you drop the little man on your road and see your house from outside?
Picture

Now, I would like you to draw a picture of your own house and describe it.
Can you include its shape, material, colour, and anything else you think is important to your house.

I hope you have a wonderful day Year 1, and I look forward to seeing all of your amazing work!

Home Learning blog - Day 29

22/2/2021

Welcome back Year 1!!

I hope you all had a lovely week off over half term and feel ready for some more learning activities! I certainly feel more refreshed and I am raring to get back into the swing of things.

Over half term, we had shrove Tuesday otherwise known as 'Pancake day'. This is followed by Ash Wednesday which is the start of Lent. In school we would make Lenten Promises. This is a time to Pray more, do more for others and give up something. Have you made your Lenten promise yet?

You could let me know what your Lenten promise is in your email containing todays work:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Without further ado, lets get cracking with your activities to complete today:
Reading:
Today we are going to have a look at a new book called 'Rowing Boats'.
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Looking at the front cover, can you make a prediction about what you think will happen in the story?
Use this sentence structure to help you:
"I predict..... will happen because..."

We are now going to familiarise ourselves with some words before we start reading the book:
Picture
Picture

As we are now in the middle of Phase 5 phonics, you will notice that letters and groups of letters can make different sounds in words. It is important to be able to recognise these in words and in different contexts.

Can you read these high frequency words? Do you need to sound them out?

Phonics:
Here is the next lesson in Phase 5. Today we will look at the sound 'o-e'. This is another split diagraph which is when a consonant goes in between the letters.
In school, to help us remember this sound we would say 'o-e, o-e, phone home'.

English: Vocabulary work
Today we are going to be looking at our word of the week, which is 'sparkling'.
I would like you to find out as much about the word 'sparkling' as you can.
  • What does it mean?
  • What other words do you know that have the same meaning?
  • How many syllables does it have?
  • Can you put it in some sentences?
  • Can you spot any diagraphs in the word?

Maths: To count in 2s.
Find the first lesson for this week titled: 'Count in 2s' whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-7-number-place-value-within-50/
When do you think we may want to count in 2s rather than in 1s?
Can you count in any other groups? We can count in 10s, as we have been looking at tens and ones within numbers to 50.
While you watch the lesson, join in then colour in the numbers you say when you count in 2s on the sheet below:

PE: Move to the beat!
Picture

I hope you have a lovely first day back everyone.
See you tomorrow!
Miss Kennedy x

Home Learning blog - Day 28

12/2/2021

Happy Friday everyone!

Welcome back to your last day of home learning before you have a well deserved break for half term!

Today you will have time to complete any work from this week. If you haven't done so already, once finished, please may you send your stories and any other work to:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk
It is so important that I see what you have been doing at home, so I know how best to support you and continue to progress after half term.

Here are your learning activities for today:
Reading:
We are going to finish looking at the book 'A Monster mistake'.
You may want to re-read or look through the book again to refresh your memory of the story, before continuing with the questions below:

Turn back to pages 12-15. How did Gran make the monster? What are the stones for?

Why was mum cross with Gran on pages 22 and 23?

Do you think there might be a real monster in a lake in Scotland?

You could also complete 'Play Activity 2' today if you have time.
Picture

Phonics:
We are going to look at another split diagraph. Today it is i-e, which we find in words such as like,, nice, bike and smile. In school, to help us remember this sound, we say "i-e, i-e, nice smile". Join in with the lesson below and don't forget to smile!

English: To read and evaluate my own story.
Use today to complete and review your story.
  • Read it back, have you included all your full stops and capital letters? If not, go back and add them in - you could do this in another colour to show your editing.
  • Have you used the descriptions you wrote when you were generating your ideas? Can you make your descriptions any better? Again add this in with another colour.
  • Are you proud of your story?
Being able to review and edit your own work is such an important skill to learn and practise. Most of the time, our first draft can always be improved in one way or another. When we re-read our work, we tend to notice things we didn't at the time - whether thats a spelling mistake, no capital letters or how you may have forgotten to use full stops.

Maths: To order numbers to 50.
Here is your last maths lesson of the half term. Can you order numbers to 50? What do you now know about numbers to 50?
Watch and join in with the lesson found here:
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-6-number-place-value-within-50/
Here is the worksheet to complete when instructed to.

Remember, there is a place value maths challenge on Purple Mash to try this week!

Catch up afternoon:
Use this afternoon to complete any outstanding work. You could also do some extra practise with some of the new phase 5 sounds, or even go over a maths lesson from this week!
For the phonics go to www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources and revisit any sounds you wish to.
Go to whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-6-number-place-value-within-50/ to recap any of the maths lesson from this week.

To finish off the week, here is a lovely story to listen to:

Have a wonderful weekend and half term Year 1. I look forward to continuing to see all your hard work next half term and hopefully we can get back into the classroom as soon as possible too!!

All the best,
Miss Kennedy x

Home Learning blog - Day 27

11/2/2021

Good Morning Year 1!

I am so very excited to read all of your stories today! I love being able to see all of the progress you are making at home and I am so proud of you all!

Please send your stories into:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Here are your learning activities for today:

Reading:
Today we are starting a new book. It is called 'A Monster mistake'. You can find it here:
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Before you start reading, look at the title and cover.
What do you think Chip is pointing to?

Read the book from cover to cover to familiarise yourself with the story – you will answer questions on the book tomorrow.

You could also have a go at 'Play Activity 1'.
Picture

Phonics:
Today you are going to learn a new sound. It is a split diagraph - this is when two letters make one sound, but they are separated with a consonant. You are going to look at the a-e sound. This makes the sound in words such as cake, bake, make, lake. In school we say the rhyme "a-e, a-e, bake a cake".

English: To retell a story in sequence.
Today we are going to finish off our stories. I hope you are as excited as I am. You are all so creative and have such wonderful ideas that your stories are always better than mine, and I cannot wait to all of your lovely ideas!

If you would like to listen to the story again, here is the video:

Here is the last bit of my story - remember to use all of your previous ideas, read what you have already written and have lots of fun with it!
Picture

Here is my story from start to finish.

Don't forget to send your finished stories to:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

I am so excited to read them!!!!

Maths: To compare numbers within 50.
Here is the next lesson in the sequence of learning. Join in with the lesson and complete the questions when instructed to!
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-6-number-place-value-within-50/

Design and Technology: To use a range of materials to create a product.
Following on from your lesson on Tuesday, you are going to use your plan to create your own cape/costume today. This is so you can wear your cape and tell your own version of Where the Wild Things are!

You will need an old (white) t-shirt as I mentioned earlier in the week and anything else you can find to help you decorate it! I would love to see pictures of the finished product!

Follow the video to make the basic cape shape and decorate how ever you wish to!

Have a tremendous Thursday everyone,
Miss Kennedy x

Home Learning blog - Day 26

10/2/2021

Happy Wednesday Year 1!

I miss you all so much, it is so lovely receiving your emails and I really appreciate you asking how I am getting on too. It makes me feel very special.
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

We only have today and two more days until half term, this is the last push before we can relax for a week.

Here are your activities to complete today:
Reading:
Today we are going to finish the story Kipper and the trolls.
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Read the book from cover to cover.
Then, turn to page 6 and think about why Biff thinks Kipper looks like a troll. Re-read page 14, do you think the trolls were nasty? Why?
Would you like to go to a troll’s party?

If you would like to, the two 'Play Activities' for this book are lots of fun too.
Picture

Phonics:
Today you are reviewing what you have learnt recently in the lesson here:

English: To retell a story in sequence.
We are writing the next part of the story today! Again, lets start off today with listening to the story again.

Now, heres a video to explain the next part...
Picture

Here is my story so far!

Have a go at the next part too.

Maths: To compare objects to 50.
Watch the next maths lesson on:
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-6-number-place-value-within-50/.
Then have a go at the worksheet below. Remember, if you don't have a printer you can always copy out the worksheet and answer the questions there.

RE: To know that the parish family spend time together after Mass.
At the end of Mass, the priest gives everyone God’s blessing and tells them to
            “Go in Peace.”
We all say: “Thanks be to God.”

Look at the picture below.

People often like to stay and share time together and sometimes the parish family gather together for refreshments.
Picture
Whilst looking at the pictures, answer the questions below:
  1. Who do you see in the picture in the hall?
  2. What special jobs are they doing?
  3. What do you think they are talking about?
  4. How do you think they are loving and serving Jesus?

Can you explore St Catherine’s Church website and find examples of the parish celebrating together?
www.stcatherinebow.church/#

Have a wonderful Wednesday everyone!
See you tomorrow,
Miss Kennedy x

Home Learning blog - Day 25

9/2/2021

Hello Everyone!!

I hope you all managed to get outside and enjoy the snow yesterday! I certainly did.

To start off today I would like to say just how fantastic the start of your stories are, I have been blown away with your creativity and I cannot wait to see what you come up with next!!
Remember to send your stories to me, either at the end of each day or you can send the whole story through once you have completed it on Thursday:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Let's get cracking with your activities today:

Reading:

We are going to continue to look at the book: Kipper and the trolls.
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Start to read the book.
STOP at page 7. What other stories have we read that have a magic key in them?
What happened in that story?
What do you think will happen in this story?
Picture

Phonics:
Here is the next lesson in Phase 5. Today the sound is 'e' and in school we would say 'e, e, he, she, be' to help us remember. Join in and have fun!

English: To retell a story in sequence.
We are going to write the next section of this story. But before that, it may be a good idea to listen to the story again to remind us what comes next.

To make sure we don't miss anything out, we need to re-read what we wrote yesterday and then go from there.
Picture

What is the next part of your story going to include? Here is mine to help you too.

Use all the ideas you have already come up with!!

Maths: To find one more and one less.
Here is the link to find the lesson, it is the second lesson titled one more and one less.
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-6-number-place-value-within-50/

Continue with the worksheet from yesterday, here it is again if you missed it:

You will also find a place value maths challenge on Purple Mash from today to complete by the end of the week. This focuses on tens and ones within numbers. Enjoy!!

Design and Technology: To explore a range of products.
So today, we are going to start thinking about creating a cape/costume so you can act out your story at home.
You are going to need an old (white) t-shirt to do this on Thursday, but today we are going to design it!!
On a plain piece of paper, you can draw an outline of your cape and then add in the details you want. You could add in labels to make your design even better!

Have a terrific Tuesday Year 1!
Miss Kennedy x

Home Learning blog - Day 24

8/2/2021

Good Morning Year 1!

This is the last week of learning from home before half term and you get a week to relax and recharge. You have all shown such dedication to your learning and I am so proud of you all.
I am so excited to read the stories you create this week!!

Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

So, without further ado, here are your activities for today:
Reading:
Here is your new book to begin the week, Kipper and the Trolls. You can find it here:
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Before reading, look at the title and cover. What is a troll? Do you know any other stories with trolls in them?
Do you think this will be a funny story or a scary one? Can you tell me why?

Can you read these words before you get going?
I’m, time, your, mode, make, troll, nails, stream
Oh, looked, washed
Picture

Phonics:
We are still going on Phase 5. Today you are looking at the 'a', sound. Like some of the other sounds we have looked at recently this letter can make two sounds - a short 'a' sound in apple and a longer sound 'a' in acorn.
In school when we see this sound in Phase 5 we would say 'a, a, Amy has an acorn'.
Join in and have fun with the lesson.

English: To retell a story in sequence.
The day has come Year 1, we are going to start writing our stories - I am very excited. I love seeing you all become authors and you always surprise me with novel and creative ideas. Your stories always turn out better than mine, and I hope these ones will be the same.

Let's start the lesson, with reading the story again.

Today we are just going to look at the first two boxes of our plan and write a couple of sentences to begin our story. Try to use all of the discussions you have had and work you have done over the last couple of weeks to feed into your story this week.
Picture

Here is the first part of my story written down for you too.

Can you write yours? Remember to use your plan to help you, and use any ideas that you wrote down last week too!

Maths: To find one more and one less.
Here's the link to the maths videos for this week: whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-6-number-place-value-within-50/
Today you are doing the first lesson titled 'One more and one less.' Watch and join in with the lesson and answer the questions when directed to. This worksheet is for today and tomorrow, so you are only going to complete the first part today!

PE:
Here is a picture of the lesson to complete today and there is also a youtube video attached to further explain.
Have fun Year 1!!
