Home Learning blog - Day 18

29/1/2021

Happy Friday everyone!!

I can't believe we are at the end of January, and one whole month into you all learning from home. I hope you can all see how much progress you have made in this short space of time, you are persevering and believing in yourselves through a difficult time, and you are achieving so much!
Keep it up Year 1, hopefully we can all see each other again in the classroom soon!

Let's finish the week strong!
Here are your activities to complete today:
Reading:
I would like you to read the story again from cover to cover. Today is the last day we will be looking at this book.

Today you are going to practise your inference skills:
Turn back to page 11, why did Tom and Dad carry the donkey? Was it a good idea to please everyone?

Now, using the story map, can you re-tell the story? Try to use your own words to summarise the events.
Picture

Phonics:
Here is the last phonics lesson of the week. You are introduced to the Phase 5 sound 'ie'. This is a diagraph that makes the 'I/igh' sound on words such as 'pie' and 'tie'. In school, we say the rhyme, "ie, ie, tie the pie'. What actions would you do with your hands to help you remember this sound?
Join in with the lesson. If you want to have a play with this sound, go to the Phonics Play website, and play one of the first three games, remember to click on 'phase 5' and then find the 'ie' sound, or any of the other sounds you have learnt this week.
www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources

English: To write a character description.
If you would like to listen to the story again, choose one of the clips below:

For the past couple of days, you have been generating ideas and creating your own Wild Thing. I love the pictures I have seen so far!! You are all so creative, I cannot wait to read what you come up with today.

Today you are going to use what you have already been working on, and write a character description. Here you will look back and the picture you drew yesterday and read the labels you added. Then I would like you to put those labels into full sentences.
For example, the label 'Sharp yellow teeth' would read in a sentence:
'My gigantic Wild Thing has sharp yellow teeth.'
You could extend this even further by saying:
"My gigantic Wild Thing has sharp yellow teeth that are sharper than a knife.'

I would also like you to think about if it has a special ability? Some of you created a unicorn like character, are these able to fly?
Don't forget to give your Wild Thing a name!!

For an extra challenge (I know you all like these!)
When you write your character description, can you begin it in a way that appeals to the reader?
For example, you could write:
You will not believe your eyes! This unknown creature is truly remarkable.  Let me tell you why. It has...

You may find it useful to talk through your description with an adult first before you write - remember this is what we do in school!!
Don't forget those capital letters, finger spaces and full stops!

Maths: To compare number sentences.
Today you are finishing the topic of 'Addition and Subtraction within 20'. Here is your last lesson:
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-4-number-addition-and-subtraction-within-20/

Catch up afternoon:
As always Year 1, you have some extra time this afternoon to complete any work you may not have managed to finish throughout the week.

If you have completed all of your work, listen to the story found on this link:
www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/A-hole-in-the-bottom-of-the-sea/

Have a wonderful day and weekend Year 1!
Miss you all so much,
Miss Kennedy x

Home Learning blog - Day 17

28/1/2021

Hello Year 1!

We are nearing the end of yet another week of home learning. Well done to you all who are staying very busy and on track at home. I can see all the progress you are making, I hope you can see it too!

Don't forget to keep sending in your work to:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Here are your activities for today:
Reading:
We are going to continue to look at the book titled: Tom, Dad and Colin. You can find it on the Oxford Owl website:
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Start to read the book:

On page 2 stop and think, where are the characters going?

On page 3, you may begin to learn who is who, were your predictions from yesterday correct?
Picture

Phonics:
Here is your next phonics lesson. Today you are going to learn the 'ir' sound. In school we would say "ir, ir, a whirl and a twirl'. Can you make up an action to help you remember this sound too?

English: To design and label my own Wild Thing.

Start off your lesson by listening to the story. Can you join in with any of the phrases yet?

Yesterday you created your own Wild Thing using playdough. Today, I would like you to draw a picture of your Wild Thing. Once you have drawn it and coloured it in, can you add labels to it? These will help you to describe your character. E.g. Sharp yellow teeth. Try and use exciting words!! Can you use any -er or -est words too?

Maths: To find and use related facts.
Here is your maths lesson for today. As always, listen and join in when you are asked to.
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-4-number-addition-and-subtraction-within-20/

Art: To use materials to design and make products.

Can you find lots of different items of clothings around your house. You may want to find a wooly jumper, gloves, and a t-shirt. Do they have any repeating patterns on them? If the pattern is not visible, gently pull the fabric apart and look really carefully. Can you see any patterns now? You may see some overlaps.

Today, I challenge you to recreate these patterns, but how? My favourite way to do this is by weaving paper. Here is a little video to show you how to do it.
If you want to recreate these patterns in another way, go for it!! Remember to send through what you have done, I will share all of your ideas next week on the blog.
I wonder who will come up with a different idea?

Have a fabulous day everyone,
Miss Kennedy x

Home Learning blog - Day 16

27/1/2021

Good Morning Year 1!

We are half way into another week of home learning and I am so impressed with your continued hard work at home. Doing all the work set each day will help you so much when we can all be back together again in the classroom.

Here are your learning activities for today:
Reading:
Today we are starting to look at another book together. This one is called 'Tom, Dad and Colin'.

Look at the front cover:
Can you decide who you think is who? Who do you think is Colin?

Can you read the high frequency words in this story?
Said
Have
So
Were
Little
When
Can you read these quickly?
Picture

Phonics:
Today you are going to recap the sounds you have learnt so far in Phase 5.
If you need any extra practise of these sounds go to the Phonics Play website, choose one of the first three games, click on Phase 5 and choose the sounds you think you need to go over again.
www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources

English: To begin to design my own 'Wild Thing'.
Using plasticine/playdough can you make a 3D model of your own Wild Thing? We are going to start to think of ideas to write our own story. Think back to your fantasy world too, what creatures did you include there? What kind of Wild Thing are you going to create?

Once you have created your own Wild Thing, consider ways in which it will move, what sounds will it make, is it bigger or smaller than you? Discuss these points with an adult.

There is a good playdough recipe on this website if you do not have any at home. Don't worry about food colouring if you don't have any!
theimaginationtree.com/best-ever-no-cook-play-dough-recipe/

Here is a video of how to make an elephant out of playdough to get your creative juices flowing. You may wish to use some of these techniques in creating your own Wild Thing.

Maths: To subtract by crossing 10 (2)
Today you are going to continue with your learning from yesterday. Join in with the online lesson and complete the questions when instructed to.
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-4-number-addition-and-subtraction-within-20/

RE: To recognise how the Priest helps us.
The parish family gathers to celebrate Mass with the priest on Sunday.

The Priest leads the parish family as they gather to celebrate Mass at church on Sunday. The Priest is a special person who has been chosen to do God’s work. Fr. Javier is our Priest!

As a gathering hymn is being sung, the Priest and the Altar Servers process through the Church to the altar.  The Priest, with everyone, makes the Sign of the Cross and says some words of welcome.

The priest wears different coloured vestments according to the time of the Church’s Year. Green is worn in Ordinary times.

Today, it would be great if you could role play the Priest, welcoming everyone when the parish family gather for Mass on Sunday, using the words:
“In name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
“Amen.”
“The Lord be with you.”
“And with your spirit.”

Can you find some material that will help you look the part? Perhaps you could welcome your family into a room in your house and then say the words above.

Have a great day Year 1!

Home Learning blog - Day 15

26/1/2021

Hello everyone!!

How are you all getting on?
Sadly we are needing to stay at home for a little while longer, but I know you will work hard and try your best on all of the activities I will ask you to do.
Remember, if you need to ask me anything regarding your work, please do not hesitate to. I am here to help as best as I can!!
I would also love to see some more of your work. Once you complete it all for each day send it to me via the email:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk
It is important that I see the work you are doing at home so I know how best to progress your learning!

Here are your activities for today:
Reading:
Read the book again, this will be the last time. To find the book go to:
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/
Then have a go at ‘Play Activity 2'.
Next, I would like you to think about these questions:
  • What was your favourite part in the story?
  • Can you summarise the story into THREE sentences? (HINT: beginning, middle, end)
Picture

Phonics:
Join in with the next lesson. Today your new sound is 'ea'. In school you would learn the rhyme 'ea, ea' a cup of tea' to help you remember the sound. Practise this at home too!

Reading: To sequence events in a story
Listen to the story again.

Now I would like you to think about these questions, discuss your answers with an adult.
(You do not need to write your answers to these questions)
  • What magical thing starts the adventure?
  • How does Max get to the setting?
  • What happened when he got there?
  • Who did he meet?
  • What made him want to go home?
  • How did he get back?

Today you are going to sequence these pictures.
Can you write a sentence to go alongside them to help sequence the story?
(If you do not have a printer, use the pictures to help you sequence sentences)

Maths: To subtract by crossing 10 (1)
Watch and join in with the lesson. Have a go at the questions when you are instructed to. Remember to use objects to help you if you need to.
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-4-number-addition-and-subtraction-within-20/

You will also be able to find a maths challenge on Purple Mash. Can you recall all the addition and subtraction facts to 20? Have a go and see how you get on! This challenge will be available to complete for the rest of the week, so wait until you are confident with subtracting before you give it a go.
You will also have time during Friday afternoon's catch up time to complete it!

Geography: To understand that different clothes are worn in different countries.

Have a look at the powerpoint below. This shows you what people wear in different countries and explains why.

Now I would like you to write a sentence(s) about the clothes these people are wearing.  Use the word bank for some help.

Thats all from me today!
Enjoy your learning, remember to take breaks between the tasks, just like we would in school.
Send in everything you do to: Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Home Learning blog - Day 14

25/1/2021

Good Morning Year 1!

I hope you had a lovely weekend!!
I miss you all so much and seeing the work you send in, makes me feel so proud to be your teacher!

Just a quick reminder to those who haven't sent in work recently, use this email to do so:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Here are your activities for today:
Reading:
We are going to continue to look at the book 'The Scarf' today. To find it again, go to
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/
Today I would like you to read the book and then have a go at ‘Play Activity 1’. Here you will be answering questions based on what you have read. Can you recall all the information?
Picture
Phonics:
We are continuing with Phase 5, and today's new sound is 'oy'.
In school we would say the rhyme, "oy, oy, spoil the boy".
What do you notice about the words 'spoil' and 'boy'. What is the same and what is different?
Join in with the lesson below and have fun!!

English: To use the suffixes -er and -est in a description.
On Friday, you joined in with the Wild Rumpus, did you have fun?
Today you are going to think about what it was like and write a description so I can read all about what you did.
Here are the wild rumpus images again to help to jog your memory:
Here are some words that you may want to use within your description.
  • Can you add the -er and -est suffixes onto the end of the root words?
  • What happens the words big, crazy and happy when you add these suffixes?
Picture
Can you write some sentences to describe the wild rumpus using some of these words? You can add your own too.
You may want to use some action words too, such as: stomp, stamp, chant, dance, wave, jump, and swing.

Here is an example:
The wild rumpus was the craziest party I have ever been to. There was music playing that was louder than a lion's roar. I was stomping and jumping around! I was the happiest I have felt in a long time because I was dancing with all of my friends.

Can you use more of these words than me, I am sure you can!!

Maths: To subtract by counting back (crossing 10).
Have a go at the maths lesson for today. We are continuing to count backwards, but this time we will be crossing 10. Good luck and have fun!! Remember to use objects around your house if you need to!

Here is the link to the website to find the video:
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-3/

PE:
Today you will be playing a game called jumping dice.
Here are your instructions:

Home Learning blog - Day 13

22/1/2021

Hello Year 1!

I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing day yesterday to celebrate the feast of Saint Agnes.
I can't quite believe we have now reached the end of our third week of learning from home. I love seeing the work you produce and send over. You are all working so hard and this will make such a difference when we can all be back in the classroom together again.

For one last day this week, here are your learning activities:
Reading:
Today, we are going to start looking a new book. It is called 'The Scarf'.
Just from the title, can you tell what season the book is set in? How do you know this?
What other items of clothing do you wear just in the colder months?

Then I would like you to have a look at the words below. Can you read these? Do you need to sound them out or do you just recognise them?
Picture
Picture

Phonics:
Phase 5, lesson 32.
Today the sound you are going to be looking at is the 'ou' sound. In school, we would say 'ou, ou, shout it out!' Try and remember the rhyme.
Remember to write the sound down as well as the words you are instructed to - just like you would in school.

English: To use spoken language to imagine and explore ideas.
Have a look at the images below. What is happening in them?
Discuss with an adult what is happening in the pictures:
  • How is Max feeling?
  • How are the Wild Things feeling?
  • How do their facial expressions show this?
  • What the music might sound like at the rumpus? Would it be loud or quiet?  Fast or slow? How would this help create the mood?
  • How would the characters be dancing?
Watch this video of the Wild Rumpus:
Today we are going to have some fun: Pretend you are at the Wild Rumpus with Max and the Wild Things. Have a good dance around your room or home to join in.
You could even try and make some music to go along with the party too! Find some pots and pans to hit!
I love dancing, I always have a little boogie in the morning to lift my spirits, how did joining in with the dance make you feel?

Maths: To subtract by counting back

Here is todays maths lesson. Join in when you are asked to and complete the questions throughout the lesson too.
There are two lessons titled 'to subtract by counting back' ensure you watch the first one today!
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-3/

As always use this afternoon to complete any unfinished work. Remember to try to complete the number bonds challenge on Purple Mash too!!

Here is a story to listen to and enjoy to complete the week:
www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/everybunny-dance/
Click on the stars for little surprises and check out the lightbulb questions as you go too!
Think about why I may have chosen this story, is it similar to anything else we have read?

Have a wonderful weekend Year 1!
All the best,
Miss Kennedy x

The Feast of Saint Agnes.

21/1/2021

Good Morning Year 1!

Today is going to be different to what you are now used to. Today is a very special day in the Liturgical Year. It is the Feast day of Saint Agnes. So, today you have a day to relax! I will not be providing activities for you to complete today.

As said in the letter sent out last week, on this day we usually celebrate the your talents. Therefore, today you could share your talents with your family, put on a show and have some fun!
There are some other fun activities on this website:
www.catholicicing.com/st-agnes-crafts-feast-jan-21/
I particularly like the idea of making the St. Agnes cookies.

If you would like to send over images of what you get up to, I would love to see them!
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Have a wonderful day!
Miss Kennedy x

P.S. check back tomorrow for learning activities!

Home Learning blog - Day 12

20/1/2021

Hello Year 1!

Good morning Year 1. I hope you are having a good week! I am so proud of all the effort you are putting in at home to continue your learning. I cannot stress how important it is for you to keep practising and progressing whilst you are at home. When we do get back into the classroom, all the learning you are doing now will make a huge difference.

I would like to remind you about MyON. This is another way of accessing lots of books online. You were given your login details in Reception and they haven't changed. If you need reminding, pop me an email and I will send them over to you.
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk
Here are your learning activities for today:

Reading:
Today is the last day we will be looking at the book Painting the Loft.
Read the book again and have a go at
'Play Activity 2'.
Then I would like you to review the story:
  • Did you like the book?
  • What was your favourite part and why?
Picture

Phonics:
Today, we are starting on Phase 5. The first sound is 'ay' and in school we would say the rhyme, 'ay, ay, may I play?' Can you think of any other words that have an 'ay' sound in them?
Follow along and join in with the lesson.

English: To compose a letter.
Now we know that Max feels a little lonely and upset in the story, I think it would be a nice idea to try to help him. What do you think we could suggest that he does to feel better? When someone feels a little unhappy it is good to try to comfort and reassure them.

As we cannot all be together, and we definitely cannot meet Max to help him, maybe we should write a letter to him, what do you think?

To begin a letter, we need to state who we are writing to, in this case it is Max so we will start like this:
Dear Max,

Now we need to start telling him why we are writing:
I heard that you were feeling unhappy...

Then we should tell him what we have come up with and give him some solutions to make him feel better:
To feel better you could…

Finally to end our letter, we should tell him who has written to him:
Love…

Have a go at writing a letter to Max to help him out. You are all such good friends to each other, I am sure you will come up with some wonderful suggestions.

Here is the story again, watching it again may give you some more ideas:

Maths: To subtract by not crossing the 10.
Here is today's lesson and activity to have a go at. Enjoy!!
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-3/

R.E.: To discuss the special people in the Church.
There are special people in our lives who are there to help us.
Lots of you came up with lovely suggestions of the special people in our community, for example our NHS workers, police officers, fire fighters and teachers. I really like the last suggestion, thank you!

The church has celebrations that bring people together. The Church’s celebrations are community occasions. On Sundays, people in the parish (the church family) gather together. It is a time to remember how much there is to celebrate; a time to say thank you; a time to know that God’s love is offered and made visible here and now in Jesus and in people.

Can you think of people who help us at Mass?
Do you recognise any of these people or the jobs they do? How might they help us? Remember to write in full sentences.
Use these sentence starters to help you:
  • The Priest helps us by…
  • The choir help us to...
  • The Altar Servers help the priest...
  • The Sunday School Teacher help children...
Have a fantastic day of learning Year 1! Please send all your work to:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Miss Kennedy x

P.S. It has also come to my attention (thanks to George's mum) that Amazon are doing free educational books on Kindle or iPad. They have the White Rose worksheets we are working from. If you type into the search bar 'Free Maths books Year 1' it should come up. We are doing Addition and Subtraction to 20 at the moment. This could be easier for some of you to work from and edit before sending them over to me.

Home Learning blog - Day 11

19/1/2021

Good Morning Year 1!

I hope you are all well and staying safe in your homes. I love seeing the work you are completing at home so as  always, keep sending it to me via this email address:
Year1@st-agnes.towerhamlets.sch.uk

Being able to give you feedback each day helps me to feel like we are all learning together still.

Here are you learning activities for today:

Reading:
www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

Find the book we started looking at yesterday: Painting the Loft.
Today, I would like you to read the book from cover to cover and have a go at '
Play Activity 1'
This is a rhyming activity. Complete the words to make rhyming pairs.
As an extension, can you make your own rhyming pairs? Write these down and send them over to me.
Picture

Phonics:
Today is the last day on Phase 4. Tomorrow you will be learning new sounds. As always make sure you really know the sounds you are shown.
I would also recommend revising all of the Phase 4 sounds today using the Phonics Play website: www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources
Choose one of the first three games, select Phase 4 and then click on 'Revise all Phase 4'.

English: To use the prefix un- to describe a character.
Today we are going to be using the prefix un-. These two letters go before a word for example 'unkind'. When we add this prefix it gives the word the opposite meaning.

Watch this video of the story and then think about how we can describe max using un- words.
Can we describe Max using un- words?
For example you could write:
Max was unafraid and unkind.

Can you write at least three sentences to describe Max using the un- prefix?

Here is a game you could play to finish your lesson today. It is on the BBC website.
www.bbc.co.uk/games/embed/small-town-superheroes?exitGameUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fbbc.co.uk%2Fbitesize%2Farticles%2Fzncgvk7
It's called 'Small Town Superheroes'. Click on the 'play' button and then choose 'Prefixes and Suffixes'. Try the 'easy' level first.

Maths: To add by making 10.
Here is your maths lesson and activity for today:
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-3/

History:
To identify the differences between old and new objects.

Below you will find a table with two columns, one for old clothes and the other for new clothes. You will also find a selection of images. Can you sort them into the two groups?

As an extra challenge, can you write a simple comparison about the old and new clothing?

Have a wonderful day today Year 1, I look forward to seeing your work later on today.

All the best,
Miss Kennedy x

Home Learning blog - Day 10

18/1/2021

Happy Monday Year 1!

I hope you all had a good weekend and managed to have some time to relax and play!
Last week I was so impressed with the quality of work sent over. Despite completing your learning at home, you are remembering everything you learnt during the first term in school and I could not be more proud!

Here are your activities for today:
Reading:
For the first three days of this week we are going to be looking at this book: Painting the Loft.

Look at the front cover and blurb.
We are going to make a prediction first, before we read the story.
  • What do you think will happen in this story?
  • Can you tell me why you think this will happen?
Picture
Picture

Next, practise these sounds and words, before you start reading.
Picture

Now you can begin to read the book. Stop on Page 5.
  • Why do you think Biff thinks the loft is like a tent?

Phonics:
You can so near the end of Phase 4 now. Make sure you are super confident with all of these sounds. If you are, really try and make your handwriting as neat as possible when you practise writing the words. Can you join your letters together?
Here is today's lesson:

English: To compose questions.
Here is the story for you to listen to again:

Today, have a go at writing some questions down for Max. What do you want to find out about him?
When you write a question, use one of these question words and don't forget to finish it off with a question mark (?).
  • where
  • what
  • when
  • why
  • how
Can you write three questions for Max?
Or to challenge yourself even further, can you write one question for each of the question words above?

Maths: To add by making 10.
Before watching the lesson, join in with the number bond song!
Now, watch and join in with the video and have a go at the learning activities explained in the video.
whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/spring-week-3/

For the first activity, you can draw a ten frame on a piece of paper and play with a sibling or a parent at home.
Then have a go at the second activity. Choose two numbers to add together - make sure you complete the first ten frame before you start on the second!!

I have also set a number bond challenge on Purple Mash for you to try this week. Start on 'Challenge A'. Here you will shoot the balls to complete the number bonds. The number you are trying to make is shown on the left hand side of the screen. It starts easy, but does get quite tricky when you progress through the levels.

P.E.
Today, have a go at balancing. Balancing is something we forget to work on - I definitely need more practise at this.
Follow the lesson below and let me know how you get on. I know some of you also joined in with PE with Joe last Monday so feel free to do that too! Exercise is a great way of boosting our brain power!!
